Abdullah to Lead Three-Way Beirut Summit [Jul 30]
“Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah will lead a rare tripartite summit in Beirut on Friday to bring together President Bashar Assad of Syria and President Michel Suleiman of Lebanon in an effort to improve inter-Arab relations. The reconciliation summit is widely seen as the successful outcome of King Abdullah’s diplomatic overtures to strengthen Arab unity and confront the challenges facing the Arab Ummah.. ..King Abdullah and President Assad will travel together to Beirut on Friday to try to calm tension over a UN tribunal set up to try suspects in the 2005 assassination of Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. Ahab Case Shouldn’t Be in U.S., Judge Says [Jul 30]
“A state judge threw out several lawsuits Thursday related to a continuing dispute between Saudi conglomerate Ahmed Hamad Al Gosaibi & Brothers Co. and Saudi billionaire Maan al-Sanea. New York Supreme Court Justice Richard Lowe III said three lawsuits, including two by United Arab Emirates-based bank Mashreqbank against Ahmed Hamad Al Gosaibi & Brothers and its general partners, should be litigated outside the U.S.. ..’We are pleased with the court’s ruling and, in particular, with its recognition that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is the better forum for the resolution of the parties’ differences,’ said Robert Serio, a lawyer for Mr. Sanea. In a statement, Eric Lewis, a lawyer for Ahab, said Ahab believes the decision is wrong as a matter of both law and policy and that it is considering its options. UN Urges Saudi Arabia to Stop Expelling Somalis [Jul 30]
“The UN refugee agency has urged Saudi Arabia to stop deporting Somalis, saying 2,000 people have recently been sent to Mogadishu. The UNHCR says those forced back to the Somali capital are at risk. There is almost daily fighting there between Islamist militants and government troops backed by African Union peacekeepers. The UNHCR has asked all countries not to deport people to south and central Somalia. Most of this region is under the control of the al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabab group and its allies.
